– good kid snacks from the 90’s! So when my cousins came to visit us in the summer, I wanted them to enjoy all of the snacks that they could in a short period of time. My mom, on the other hand, kept our pantry stocked with Gushers, Handi-snacks, Dunkaroos, Hi-C, etc. My aunt and uncle were going through a “healthy” phase (although in hindsight it was actually pretty unhealthy) and only kept oranges and saltines around the house for their kids to snack on. My favorite food memory has to be when I was 8 or 9 years old and introduced my cousins to the “Wonderful World of Eating”. I loved it so much that when I was married had members of the Los Angeles Chamber Music Orchestra–flute, violin, harp etc….play just the music (no vocals) instead of the ‘Wedding March’. Dad was tall, dark and handsome and sang it as well as Cesare Siepi here: I don’t know where that tradition started. On Thanksgiving with beautiful music, decor, a gorgeous set table and lit candles all sparkling under the chandelier, and a delectable feast made by our mother–the high point to me was that our parents sang ‘One Alone’ from ‘Desert Song’ each Thanksgiving before we ate. Usually the 5 of us kids were at the kitchen table with the dog beneath, giving our parents ‘their time’ alone. Thanksgiving was one of the few times we all ate together in the beautiful dining room. My mother took opera and nutrition in college, she looked like Eva Marie Saint in ‘The Russians are Coming’ and had an amazing voice (as did Dad who also sang in his youth).
